Updates deleting Config
Complaint
I have been unable to configure working stepper control in 12.5.10, wasting a considerably amount of time.
So why has the development team chosen to delete configuration information when performing an upgrade.
Surely previous config info should be carried over.
If the changes are so structural, then provide an upgrade function so we can get up and running without having to spend hours trying to tell what has been added or changed in the UI and how previous settings should now migrate.

Re: Updates deleting Config
There is no such thing as an update. You have to save all of your info and start from scratch with a new version.
I agree it is a royal pain that an upgrade is not an option. If you have not done so, reload your old report in the old version and save all of the info, so it can be put into a newer version.

Re: Updates deleting Config
This is why it's helpful to create a report and also create screen shots of all your wizard pages, simply press CTRL+P and it'll create a PDF of all your settings to reinstall in the latest version. It's take no more than 30 minutes to do a new install.
As Ken stated, there's no such thing as an "upgrade". You are installing a NEW version of the software each time.

Re: Updates deleting Config
And adding to my last comment, nothing is ever deleted when you install a new version. If you remember when you installed the new version a message box popped up and said "hey, you already have cnc12 installed, we'll back that up, ok?". If you hit "ok" then it renames that folder to become a backup of your existing install. It's all still there in its entirety. If you want to revert back you can simply rename that folder and launch your old version just as it was.

Re: Updates deleting Config
the cnc12 install does not delete anything. as a matter of fact it makes a back up copy for you of the existing installation of cnc12FlyingHaggis wrote: ↑Fri Aug 16, 2024 5:03 pm Complaint

Re: Updates require reconfiguration...
I think this CNC control software outperforms Mach3, which I have used for over 15 years. I enjoy using CNC12 and feel it's very stable and it follows gcode flawlessly. I'm running version 5.10 and would like to keep up with all the screen enhancements and firmware updates. Unfortunately, reinstalling everything to 5.20, would be problematic. I watched the YouTube video describing how fast and painless this should be, but in reality it is a multi-hour test to see how many files need to be transferred from one rev to the next. Changing from one minor revision to the next is not a major update and the installer should perform this transaction automatically. Agreed, new functionality requires special handling, but existing functionality overrides it unless we specifically activate it. The wizard is not the installer, however, that interface could facilitate importing settings and copying all the G&M codes from the previous install. Manually going into each setup page and then copying many files from folders, taking screen-shots and redoing everything is archaic and error prone. Putting a positive spin on how wonderful this is in the video, does not make the process less tedious or error-free. Perhaps, the software developers have convinced Centroid, that it's just too complicated to handle all the possible changes from machine to machine and that the manual method is the only way to ensure 100% compatibility. It may be a way, but it's not the best way. Understandably, Centroid has no choice but to make the best of the software situation. The operation of CNC12 is great, the next software priority should be improving the updating process to bring the user back to the same configuration they had before the installed update. All modern software ensures this behavior because it permits the product to seamlessly evolve for the better.

Re: Updates require reconfiguration...
Please note and understand a new version of CNC12 is NOT AN UPDATE. You are installing a completely new version of the software. The only thing the new version does to the old version is create a backup for you incase the "you know what" hits the fan.robert.trescott wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 12:20 am The operation of CNC12 is great, the next software priority should be improving the updating process to bring the user back to the same configuration they had before the installed update. To yourpoint, when you UPDATE any software it does copy over current settings when it UPDATES. Centroid is providing complete NEW software not an update. I know this doesn't help you but I just wanted to point this out again. You are doing a FRESH install of NEW software.
Beta testers who do this all the time can do this in 30 minutes or less on full custom machines. It should take the average user no more than an hour to install a new version. And this includes enough time to go get you favorite adult beverage while you work.

Re: Updates deleting Config
Maybe it's the "favorite adult beverage" that's causing the problems.

Cheers,
