Acorn with older Yaskawa drives

Hi, got a question about a retrofit that I would like to perform on a Fryer touch 2000 lathe with a broken control. The machine has Yaskawa AC servo drives, and was built in year 2000, so it is 18 years old. It had been in a school, an never used so the iron is mint. The model number is: SGDA-08ASY195 , it says on another lable, Motor 200hz, Range 0-300 , 240 volts single phase. Will this older servopack work, or do I have to get new drives?

I looked at the wiring diagram on your site for hooking up Yaskawa drives, and the pins shown are 7, 8, 11/ 12, 31, 32, 40, 44, 47 . The sockets on my drives only have 38 pins! I noticed that the newer Servopacks have different plugs than mine do.

I have an “operator” , 1CN, and 2CN plugs which are the same sized plug, I do not have CN3, CN5, CN7, or CN8, and then on side the hookup lugs for power and power to the drives are the same. 2CN looks like it is hooked up to the encoder on the drives, I assume that I can just leave that as is and the Acorn will ignore it, as it is open loop.

The control for the machine was actually mostly taken out, however there was a plug to nowhere ( the wire was cut, just hanging off the SERVOPACK ) in the 1CN socket (38 pin I counted) that had two bundles coming out of it. One bundle is five wires, red, black,blue, orange, white.
The other bundle is nine wires, red, black, blue, orange,white , brown, yellow, green, purple.

Acorn can run them..but its a pretty sweet and easy retrofit with an Oak board i've done a couple machines with these drives they are nice to work with. here is a TB that i wrote after i did my first Oak upgrade on a 20 year old MSC knee mill that had the old yaskawas.

Go with the OAK board....especially if it has an automatic turret

Maybe this is a dumb question, but which Sigma (I or II?) series are my drives? They don't look like your photos, the plugs are different. The servo packs don't say, and I don't see any label that says what. I admit to being over my head here. The machine is basic, no turret, inverter spindle with an encoder. I think the machine was made in 1999.

Should I get the Centroid cables?

Your SGDA-08AS is a Sigma I drive that only supports speed/torque control (±10 VDC).

If it was a SGDA-08AP (position control), then it could possibly be controlled by an Acorn sending step/direction commands.

jj80909, wow, thank you, that helps a lot. Some times you need bad news to move forward. maybe a dumb question, but I see the 08AP servo packs used on ebay for cheap, will they drive my servos? Or are they matched to the controller? If I don't need to get new servos, that would make things easier.

I think you'll be fine if you replace the 08AS drive with a 08AP drive as long as they are the same voltage. You will need to get a JUSP-OP02A1-E programmer to auto-tune the motor/drive.

The Yaskawa drives do require differential step/direction inputs, so you'll have to install pull-up resistors as shown in the Acorn/SIGMA V schematic.

Alternatively, an OAK board can supply the ±10 VDC for your current drives.

I think all of the above is true, but I have yet to try it myself. I also have a Fryer ET-18 lathe with the Touch 2000 control and have been researching how to update it. Fortunately for me, my lathe's control is still fully functional. I'm still on the fence with the Acorn as it does not have enough inputs to allow keeping the two MPGs, feedrate switch, joy-stick, etc. and the Oak does not currently support the touch control panel. I'm waiting to see if more inputs will be offered with the Acorn or what the Red Oak will offer.

May I ask which route did you take to rebuild your Fryer 2000

The SGDA drives have one major shortcoming when used with Oak as a closed-loop control: there is no separate logic power connection, so when your Emergency Stop cuts off line power to the drives, you lose encoder feedback.

Because of this, you have to disable the detection of encoder errors, and you have to re-home the machine any time you resume operation after a fault or emergency stop. Outside of those limitations, they do run just fine with an Oak control, in analog velocity mode.

I have a Fryer 2000. The computer is not working, and I hope everything else is.
It has: Yaskawa SGDB-10ADG for the z Axis, Yaskawa SGDA-08AP on the X axis, a Yaskawa CIMR-V7AU23P7 5HP spindle driver, two Yaskawa servo motors and a 5HP Spindle motor
I am assuming that with the exception of the Items listed above, not much else can be used.
Is it best to start from scratch and bring this system to a single phase unit. or upgrade as it is
