I was looking through my stash and I don't have enough to do everything. I was thinking just buying all the panel supplies through Automation direct, but I don't need 500' rolls.

**Edited out original link to the hookup wire because it turned out to be copper-coated aluminum.

I'm guessing that wire has improper insulation. 80 volts is pretty low for industrial wiring.DICKEYBIRD wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2017 9:40 pm I found this & it's good wire, very flexible & you choose your colors. Perhaps a bit large for typical low current stuff:

On the crimper, I have one, and I love them.

Ouch!

I only use it for max 48vdc circuits. No problems with it so far.

Re: Where do you typically purchase hookup wire?
I bought the same ferrule kit that Dickeybird bought but I didn't like the crimping tool because sometimes the wire would pull out of the ferrule.
Then I found this crimping tool and it does a great job:

For hookup wire I bought this package:

I have bought from Remington Industries:

I too like the ferrule crimpers. You have to make sure you buy the CORRECT size ferrule for the size wire you are using. They are not universal.

Oops, thought you guys were talking about 4 conductor type cables. I'll just leave the post below in case.
Ive been buying these cables and cut off the ends. I think the DB-9 connectors have resistors built in for the Gecko G540. Anyway, it's really nice cable...soft outer jacket, fairly heavy stranded wire, shielded with drain wire. Comes out to about $1/foot if you buy the longest one they have.

Re: Where do you typically purchase hookup wire?
For my limit switches I am using a 4 conductor 22 awg alarm/low voltage type wire. I've got quite a bit in my warehouse.
For the a/c power (220volt and 120volt in my cabinet) I use regular thwn stranded in the correct gauge. Pretty cheap at home depot
I also use Tefzel wire that I get from prowireusa. They sell rolls in small quantities and have a nice color assortment. Tefzel is nice as the insulation is very thin compared to pvc and is heat and chemical resistant.
For my step and direction cables from the acorn to my servo drives I used a 24 awg shielded 4 conducter cable that was originally from a usb cable that I cut the ends off and crimped to an amphenol db-25.
What kind of wire are you looking for? I might have some extra....

Re: Where do you typically purchase hookup wire?
I have successfully used CAT6 stranded shielded Ethernet cable for encoder wire in the past. It has 4 twisted pair wire, a shield and drain wire. But Centroid's encoder cable is pretty fairly priced.
Do use stranded wire on any cable assembly subject to movement. Only ground the drain wire to the shell of the DB-9 connector, not at the encoder.
