Question then
Would using a linear scale to give positional info to the OAK be better than a rotary encoder ?

The Oak can do scale feedback for positioning in addition to he rotary encoder on the motors. It's not without downsides though. You'll need 0.1 micron resolution scales (not cheap) because position feedback inherently "hunts" back and forth across the commanded position. At best, you'll get position accuracy of 2X your scale resolution and that's with very careful tuning of your motors.
You cannot use scales in lieu of rotary encoders. The primary feedback loop needs to be close coupled to the motors or you will have all kinds of control problems. Adding in mechanical backlash (even putting the encoders on the ballscrew), can create an unstable system.

Hi!
Got a VMC300 and trun 450 from emco and it uses simo drive 611, thinking of using oak controller. Reading on this thread made it seems to work, however having all the work related to it, would it be better to replace the servo drivers and motors?
thanks...
I don't have oak yet, so I dont fully understand it. I am an Acorn user.

Depending on age/spec, i think the suggestion on another thread was to upgrade the encoders.
