You don't need the brake. The friction of the Dovetail ways will hold the head.

I did follow up with both Precision Matthews and DMM. I want to share my finding for the benefit of the community.

Matt at PM did confirm that there is nothing that prevent the z-azix from dropping other than friction from the dovetails.

DMM indicated that the brake is controlled independently by the servo drive (DYN4). The Acorn has no interface with the brake. It will need an external 24VDC power supply and 24VDC relay to control the brake. Please see attached wiring diagram from DMM.

Certainly your call on how you want to set up your Z axis. You want a brake, wire it up.
It seems the DYN4 drive will close the brake circuit when it is not holding the servo.

I think you might find there is plenty of friction on the dovetails that the head isn't just going to drop.
Try it move it up and down by hand, not coupled to a servo motor or a rack.
