Install swap out Acorn board

Post by joedexter »

The following is for G0678 mill with Acorn previously installed but needed a replacement board. Running WIN11 on dedicated desktop. I was very happy with previous operations.

This to replace in a machine that was previously operating satisfactorily ( except for later due to board damage).
I want to know if I need to complete the initial board bench test since operation was previously fine, but that the VFD input might need to be reset ie 0-10VDC/3000RPM (spindlebenchtest.cnc), data. If this needs to be done, can I reinstall the board and plug in all connections except the VFD plug (H8), then do reading? Or reconnect everything and just proceed as this step was previously completed on same computer.
What do you advise?
Thanks
J

Joe,
Its always best to do the bench test of the spindle following the Acorn install manual. start on Page 30
on the bench with nothing else connected. just takes a few minutes.
https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_di ... manual.pdf

why did you need a replacement Acorn?
what make model vfd and spindle is being used? links to users manual for the VFD?

The board was replaced because it was acting erratically. Initially when I wanted to remove the power from the stepper motors to enable hand cranking it would not remove power from the X axis, which I overcame by unplugging at the X motor controller.(ENA+&-).Then I noticed that probing was activating on Y axis if X was selected. After that in the last week the Z axis stopped holding a given depth of cut, it would suddenly and rapidly increase from commanded .1000DOC to + 050 or more. Shortly after that the Z axis would not drill to .4000 command DOC. It would stop at about .250/.300, at that point I also noticed that the RPM for the tool was not correct from the LIB. a .375 drill was spinning to 1800 RPM.
The spindle is not “ stand alone”, it is driven by 1.5 HP SP motor control by Durapulse GS20(FileS15203.DEG)VFD(0-3000rpm). been satisfactory but I have found RPM lacking at times.
