Ilefty,

Thank you for reporting your progress. I have one of theses lathes to convert at some point, so I am watching closely. What hybrid steppers you use? Did you use a Ebay seller or through an actual company? I will be also watching very closely the spindle control when you get to that point.

I am using stepper online hybrids. I bought them through Amazon. They are 425 in on nema 23. $100 with drivers.

I don’t know if I would watch to closely on the spindle control. That part is still outside my grasp a tiny bit but we shall see.

I started to convert a similar lathe, nice to see how you are building yours

So I have “most” of the mechanical done and have started looking into the wiring. I received my kbsi240d the other day and just ordered the cnc chip from LMS last night. I started working up a schematic for the stepper drivers and trying my best to not let any magic smoke out. If anyone sees an issue with this wiring layout please do let me know.

Edit** I already caught the BRK should go to COM instead

I am trying to learn from your build and would like to know what you are referring to with "CNC Chip from Little Machine Shop"? Is that for Spindle control? Thanks!

LMS sells a “cnc control chip set” the way I understand is it allows computer signal to run forward and reverse and the potentiometer instead of doing it manually.

So the start stop, direction and speed can be controlled by the board not the switches and buttons on the lathe itself.

https://littlemachineshop.com/products/ ... &category= Here’s the link. Again not 100% sure I need it but my buddy that’s an electrical engineer looked into it and said I do.

Take all my electrical knowledge with a grain of salt for now. I don’t fully understand this stuff yet

I got my Acorn bench tested yesterday afternoon and by 9pm last night I had the z axis moving. Super excited to have that part figured out and now time to start figuring out the spindle control.

I am starting to wire the spindle on my lathe. I am using a kbsi240d and I know pins 1-6 on the kbsi but wires 9-10 I understand output the signal that I need to use for speed control. Where do those wires go to on my lathe? Also I am gonna use relay one and two on the centroid relay board for forward and reverse. Where do those outputs go to the lathe at? I have seen Francos video on spindle control and in that video he has a multi meter hooked up to 9-10 to prove voltage output but once I take the leads from the multimeter off the kbsi then what? Sorry if I am not being clear but Im not sure how much more clearly to ask. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be very appreciated.

I got the spindle control figured out. I only have forward as the board in the lathe wants signal for spindle enable and then another pin on the motor controller wants to be grounded for forward and ungrounded for reverse. So if I run relay one for spin fwd with the wire for f/r on the NC side of relay two it works. Open relay 2 and it’s calling for reverse but not enable to turn the motor. Guess this is what the KBCC motor controller does so it has more circuits for forward and reverse besides two.

So I have it figured out. This is the wiring schematic I drew up to make a LMS motor controller with the cnc chip set work with the acorn utilizing a kbsi-240d. Now onto stuffing all this stuff in an enclosure.
