DMM Encoder options

Post by jebronson »

I getting ready to order DMM Drives and Motors. But what encoder options do you recommend?

Marty, what did you use on your Fadal?

The ones that came with the motor. I ordered nothing special.

What kind of machine are you working with? What's the "big picture"?

I am retrofitting a 2003, Haas TM-1. The original motors are Yaskawa X & Y are 450w, medium inertia, Z is an 850w, brake, medium inertia, all motors are 130mm mount. So, going with the DMM, I plan on using the 1kw, 130mm motors. I plan on using the Oak board. I looked at using Yaskawa drives, but for those motors the drives are only 3 phase, and very expensive. I don't wish to use a phase converter if I can help it. Using the 130mm motors from DMM, yes a little overboard on torque, but they will bolt up with no modifications. Most of the controls for this machine were gone when I bought it, so using much of any thing original is out of the question. The spindle has a 5hp motor which I have already tested using a VFD that has been installed into the SuperMax. This I got from Gohz.com, but I may use another SpedeStar single phase drive. I already have on my lathe 5Hp.

So far, I have retrofitted 2 mills, Bridgeport Interact, and a SuperMax, with the All-in-One boards, and I am working on a Novakon mill that has steppers, that I will be using an Acorn.
