Reset for VFD and Servos

Post by kenmwallace »

I am thinking to forgo using the Acorn to drive the resets on the VFD and Servos and just use pushbuttons.
Is there a reason that this is a bad idea?
I have only the 8 channels of output from relay board with the Acorn.
I want to control the Sauter turret on my lathe and I believe I will need 6 outputs to do so.
FWD
REV
INDEX PIN
POSITION CODE 1
POSITION CODE 2
POSITION CODE 3

If this is correct then I will probably have to add the expansion board as more outputs will be required to run the servos, VFD and Coolant.
Any suggestions?

why add to the operators work flow when the big reset button does the resetting for you? what is the reason?

The reason is that I was just trying to avoid having to add the expansion hardware. It tempts me to migrate to the Acorn Six.

If you are talking about a reset just to clear faults on the vfd or drives, that will probably happen with turning the power off and back on. I don't know that you NEED a button for those when a power cycle will clear them.

Keep in mind if you power cycle a motor driver to do a reset you've now lost position and would need to rehome. Some servo drives can be programmed to remember the last commanded position like Clearpath. This does not matter for a VFD, you can power cycle it for a reset if you want.

If you are out of outputs then yes you can simply add an external button to reset either. It's not the preferred way but still possible.

I just thought Keith understood him to mean the reset button on the screen in cn12, and was trying to get him to clarify what he was trying to accomplish. I took his question as resetting drives and vfd, but I'm not sure Keith did. Anytime, a major issue happens, I always suggest a rehome anyway but to each their own.

Got it, I took it as he's out of outputs and wanted a manual button to reset the devices. Either way it's all doable. :D

Add an I/O expansion

His reason for asking was to avoid having to add an I/O expansion.

I power cycle my servos with E-Stop and have Acorn setup to force Home after E-Stop, so I cannot forget it...
