full/half duplex

Post by rcwilliamsco »

I recently needed to put my cnc wood lathe back in service, everything worked fine then suddenly it didn't. I only use my second acorrn for very simple 2 axis control on the lathe. I ended up switching to half duplex and everything worked fine.

I also am running 3 and 4 axis with my other card on my old motionmaster, everything works well except the touch probe which I basically gave up on because lots of stalls and being more trouble than it was worth. My question is, would there be a problem trying half duplex to see if it stopped the stalls in a probe routine?

If this stops communication errors, digitizing will run smoothly,

Uwe is correct.

For further context:

All Centroid controls have their internal network interface set to Auto Negotiate. This is the standard with all modern Network Interface Devices. All NICs in PCs will be by default set to Auto Negotiate for the same reason. Unfortunately, in small sample of PC NICs there are issues with the Auto Negotiate. This is not universal to one particular make/model, we have seen it in samples of 100, same OS, same driver, same PC hardware otherwise, and 1 or 2 might have issues. In non-CNC applications you might see a website takes 1 second longer to load if there is an issue and Auto Negotiate has to reset again, dropped / lost packets don't have a major impact. If the same issues occurs during CNC operation however, problems will crop up.

Setting the PC NIC to Full or Half Duplex takes its Auto Negotiate out of the equation. The bandwidth even at Half Duplex is still more than sufficient for CNC operation and would not have any negative impact. We only recommend changing the PC NIC to Full or Half Duplex if issues are occurring as in ~99% of cases Auto Negotiate works as intended.

the latest CNC12 v5.1 has Intel NIC related ethernet software improvements that should eliminate having to go to half duplex with Intel NIC's that have this issue. from the release notes.

56. Improved Ethernet Communications from the PC to the BBG on Acorn which should eliminate having to go to the “half duplex” setting to pass the Communications Stress Test with some Intel Ethernet chips sets. The issue was found to be repeatable with Intel I226-V NICs. These are common in newer NUCs and the Beelink mini PC. This issue was not observed with older PCs with I218-V or I219-V NICs. Which explains why some users would have this issue and others would not.

That is what makes Centroid better than other CNC providers, fast updates and iron will to eliminate anything that could cause problems for the users.👍

Definitely one of my best decisions to go with Centroid for my CNC stuff.
