8000 RPM Spindle Encoder
Howdy all. I'm getting excited about the acornsix! Trying to get all my ducks in a row before making all my purchases. I'm looking for a spindle encoder that works with acornsix that's capable of 8000 rpms... that won't break the bank. Seems like 6000 rpm encoders are plentiful but above that they start getting a bit rarer and pricier. Any suggestions?

Could you just use a 6000 rpm encoder but run it on a 1:2 pulley reduction?

Funny you should suggest that. I was planning on doing just that but after doing some reading here on the forum it seemed like that could cause issues because the spindle wouldn't be able to differentiate between 0 and 180, seeing as how there's only one zero mark on the encoder ring but the spindle has to go around twice because of the 2:1 reduction.
But really, why wouldn't that work? It would still start a tap cycle in the same spindle orientation if I wanted to peck tap or just restart a hole that was just tapped, right? Would CNC12 throw an error if the number of encoder counts per spindle revolutions didn't match the number of zero marks?

There should not be a problem running the spindle encoder at half the speed of the spindle. As you noted, with two turns of the spindle for one turn of the encoder, your index pulse will only come around once every other turn, but it will always come around in the same place.
No, CNC12 will not care if it has to wait more than one turn's worth of counts before it sees the index pulse come around.

I am using a <40 buck SF-encoder with 400 lines on my mill up to 8300rpm
It is rated only to 6000rpm, but seems to have ok bearings on the 8mm shaft and the electronics are fast enough with 400 lines.
Tested rigid tapping up to 3000 rpm with no problems

I have an Rls re22ic041d010f3c00 That I am going to use on belt drive system 1 to 1 but im not putting tension on the actual encoder, encoder will be connected by a motor coupling so that it doesn't have any side forces on it.

I also bought this one as well From us digital would be doing same style with belt tension on a shaft and bearing setup then motor coupler on end of that shaft.
