It looks like rearranging the Y slave sensor wire in the cable track may have done the trick, and it also appears that many (all?) of the ethernet errors were the result of me turning the controller box off before exiting CNC12.

I took some (e.g., sensors) to a terminal block which in turn went to a common ground (upper left hand corner in the picture of the control box) through a 16 gauge (or larger) wire. The drives are daisy chained to the common ground - the green wires at the top of the drives.
